opium Wars - Imperialism in China

The Opium War was a really big defeat china has gone through. It's also called the Anglo-Chinese War.
By the 1830's, the british had become a major drug-trafficking criminal organization in the world. The East India Company shipped opium into Canton. It then got traded with Chinese manufactured goods for tea. It influenced them in many ways. It became a  criminal activity after 1836, but the British traders bribed Canton officials so they would be able to keep the opium. They became so addicted that by 1837 chests of opium were produced and by 1837 it was 35,000. In 1836 the imperial government made opium illegal and decided to do something about this. They closed down the opium dens. The emperor wrote a letter to queen victoria explaining that the british government was not involed in the opium trade. The sailors ended up killing the messenger so Queen Victoria never got the letter. In August, 1842 the treaty of Nanjing ended bad. Hong Kong was handed over to the british. He opened new ports and Britian was called the "most favored nation"

"Mountians of the Moon"

The film "Mountians of the Moon" is based on two english explorers, Captain Richard Francis Burton's and Lt. John Hanning Speke. They go on a expedition to find the source of the Nile river in the name of Queen Victoria's British Empire. During there jorney there friendship grows. The scary part is that they were the only white men there. Sadly they were attacked and many of there men died. The cause was also illness and other diseases likr maleria. Many of there men betrayed them and ran away with there stuff. It was harder for them to survive without there belongings. They had to face many different situtions. In the movie they had to try to make peace with a tribe by offering them silk but they were just fascinated by his hair. The source of the Nile, Lake Victoria, was named after the British Queen. They thought if they discovered they have the right to name it so they did. Europeans had technological advanteges because they had weapons. The europeans had the ability to go through Africa with no problem because they had the power of machine guns. The africans had two choices wheather to let them pass through or get killed. At the point the Africans really didn't have a choice, the only way they could protect themselves was with spears and wooden shields. Basically the eurpoeans were in luck because without doing anything they were able to conquer.

Imperialism Project

The reason why we were assigned the Imperialism project to show the form of an empire. We discovered how they exported and imported slaves. We also learned about the shipping route which came in help during trade. We learned about many natural sources. The europeans went around to get all these natural resources such as gold, silver, cotton etc. I learned that the europeans had to make many trips to get all the sources they wanted. I think it was a fun way to learn all these new facts.

Karl Marx and the communism

What is communism? Commmunism is a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state. Karl Marx's idea of Communism is about how one whole state controls everything. During the Industrail Revolution he wanted everything to be fair. Karl Marx saw the Capitalist as the " Bad guys ". He thought it was very harsh at the fact that people weren't treated equally. Some people were getting higer wages than others. Karl Marx had an idea, he thought that it would be easier if everyone got paid the same. It didn't matter if you worked a better job or worked more hours. Karl Narx idea really didn't go through the Soviet Union's government got involed and it was strict. Everyone was forced to work. Karl Marx wanted Communism to take over. He felt like workers had there own opinons they shouldn't have to obey there owners. He also didn't like the fact that workers were getting poor and on the other hand the owners were getting rich. The workers were doing all the work. During his life Karl Marx had one goal. He wanted the world to be under communism because he felt like everyone should have equal rights.

Karl Marx and the Industrail Revolution

Karl Marx was a German, his ideas changed Russian history. Marx argued that workers should be able to control factories and farms. He argued the "workers of the world to unite" in a Worldwide revolution. Marx invented communsim. The industrail Revolution inspired Marx to invent communsim. The workers would share wealth in a communist society. He wrote that wealth should be given "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs" meaning that wealth should be only given in there time of need. Marx didn't like the Industrail revolution because the conditions of workers in europle factories were harsh and unsage. He thought the workers were treated very unfairly. Marx also believed that the workers would control goverment but the communist goverments were strict. In many communist nations people weren't allowed to print news stories that talked about the goverment and the people who spoke against the Soviet goverment were treated very harsh. Also The Communist Manifesto has been one of the most influenced documents during the Industrail Revolution.

Nationalism and the Creation of Italy

Nationalism is the belief that one's greatest loyalty should not be to a king of an empire but to a nation of people who share a common culture and history. When the nation began to have his own independent government, it became a nation state. To show natalionism I wear the colors of my countries flag, I talk about there culture, the food etc. I also support there culture's teams. I'm intersted in other people's countries and the language they speak.
Nationalism was the most powerful ideal of 1800's. The balance of power set up at congresss of vienna in 1815 was going bad. It affected many people. Austrua ruled the Italian provinces of venetia and Lombardy in the north. In 1815 and 1848 many Italians weren't able to live under foreign rulers. The idealistic and the pratical leader contributed to the unification of Italy.

John Locke and "The Enlightenment"

John Locke inspired many people and one of them was Thomas Jefferson. It was because of John Locke Thomas Jefferson wrote the Costitution. Thomas Jefferson stated that all people in the United States should be able to share. The rights that Thomas Jefferson wrote about in the Constitution was basically explaining that everyone is created equal. Everyone has the right to have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It was belived that in every human being there was powerful voice within them and will be heard. When there's people elected in the congress it us we the people that makes that come true. We vote to see who will make our country better wheather it's the president or mayor.

The trail of Galileo

During the Middle Ages there were many theories about the solar system. The two therios were the Heliocentric and the geocentric theories. The heliocentric theory is that the sun is in the center of the universe and all the other planets revolve around the sun. The geocentric theory is that the Earth is the center of the universe and the planets revolve around it. They started to develop many mathematics and science skills and were able to use there prior-knowlege to figure out that the earth was not the center of the universe. They finally discovered that the Planets really do revolve around the sun. So basically the correct theory was Heliocentric theory. They had proof to prove there statement that the sun was bigger than the earth and it was also in the center of the universe.

Galileo Galilei was an Italian teacher that faced trial in 1633. He was arrested for teaching his students about evolution. The Catholic church were the one that had him on trail because in his book he had written that the planets did not revolve around the Sun. His beliefs were different than others. He wrote that the planets revolved around the Sun and not the earth. The person behind his belief, and idea's was copernicus. Obviously if your catholic and you believe in the bible you would chose geocentrism and thats what the catholic's did. But Galileo, someone who has been studying science for a while belived in heliocentrism. When Galileo said he didn't believe in geocentrism the catholic's thought he was disrespecting god and the bible. Galileo was punished but they didn't hang him to death. Gailileo theory wasn't wrong and people started to realize that when he died.

The Scienctific Revolution.

What is Scienctific Revolution? Well most scholars got there knowledge about science from the Ancient Greeks, Romans and from the holy bible. At first we thought that the earth was the center of the universe and we believed that the sun and the other 8 planets revoled around the earth. In the 1500’s Galile went to the Leaning Tower of Pisa and dropped stones of different weights to the ground. He proved Aristotle wrong and discoverd that objects of different weights fall at the same speed. Isaac Newton explained the laws of gravity to make way for our modern way of understanding physics. Aristotle thought that one set of physical laws ruled earth and that another set took over the universe. Issac Newtown stated that a universal law of gravitation was put to use equally to earth and the heavens.
The scientific method is a process by which scientists construct an accurate answer or statement to prove a hypothesis. First you ask a question, do background research, construct a hypothesis, test it with an experiment, analyze results by drawing conclusions. Then you decide wheather the hypothesis is true or its false. If it's false or partially true you try the experiment again. The you report the results you came with to prove your hypothesis

Evolution Vs. Creation

what is evolution? Evolution is when a type of organism is Reformed. It goes through stages and just like evolution. You start off from an ape and then slowly transform into a human being. When you think of Evolution you think of monkey and apes and you wonder if you really went through the transformation from generation to generation. Alot of sciencetists think that the closest thing a human is to are apes. The first debate was between Thomas Hexley and Richard Owen. Thomas argued for human evolution by showing illustrations and pointing out the similarities between humans and apes.

Creation, its something that is obviously created more like "god's gift". It's the idea that this universe and the natural things in it was created by god. The creation of the world is described in the book of Genesis. In the book its described that god created the heavens and the earth. The creation took "6 days" and Adam and Eve was created that day. Genesis gives another meaning of creation. God made Adam out of clay, prepares the Garden of Eden for him and then takes out Eve out of Adam's rib.

I agree with evolution because its more reasonable, We actually have proof that we come from apes, Its weird but its true. I don't agree with creation because we don't have proof all we have is the book of Genieses. That doesn't prove anything, what if God isn't even real? What if the natural things around us aren't because of god's creation. Alot of science has to do with the things in this universe.
